Social Justice - reflection

And We Are Free
It was Monday, it was sixth period, and we had literature. There was the television and video in the classroom. I was glad that we were going to watch a movie, because I like it. Freedom song, it sounded interesting, but I had no idea what it was going to be about. Mr. Tacheny introduced the movie for Social Justice week. But I had never heard the term "Social Justice week" before.
The week continued and I figured out what everything was about. Finally, after the gymnastic performance I found out the main reason of all the ceremonies and also I saw the intention of the movie. Life in the 60’s was unbelievably hard for African-Americans. This was USA - the country of freedom?
Somebody said, "Nothing has as big a power as the sound of freedom." The person was right. We, the people of the 20th century, have a lot of difficulty imagining what discrimination is. I don’t mean the word, but the act. If somebody cannot enter public places, because of their race, because of something that is actually not their fault, how do they feel?
Chuck McDew, a civil right activist, stated, "If not me, who? If not now, when?" People who were activists in civil rights understood that stance. They dedicated their lives to fight for freedom, not only for them but also for all colored people. They started at the first moment and they continued until the end. Even after they reached their goals, they haven’t ended the struggle to obtain equal rights. At the end of the week, it was not only the movie or short classes. It was a powerful experience, which change my view of racism. But it gave me hope as well, hope that if I stand against the majority, I can win.
