Mark Twain Huckleberry Finn - Final Writing Assignment

I believe that ‘Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ should be taught in high school. In his book Mark Twain shows the tragedy of alcoholism and violence, that forces Huck to leave his home and equality among people as Huck and Jim became real friends. Many people think that Huckleberry Finn should not be read in schools. In my paper I will prove you that they are wrong.

Huck Finn chooses to leave cabin, his only home, because he cannot suffer under Pap’s cruelties anymore. He is imprisoned in the cabin and beaten by the Pap every day. “… (Pap) went for me. He chased me round and round the place, with a clasp-knife… and saying he would kill me.” In this situation Huck do not have any choice except for the escape. He cannot stay with his father “I didn’t want to see him no more.” Huck’s fear is much stronger that his relationship with his father. Giving up family is never easy even if your father is more a master than a friend. Where will he go without money, food or friends? What will he do in the future? These questions are in Huck’s mind. This is not the only situation when Huck shows his intelligence.

Huck Finn is a young boy. He is also very mature so he can judge situations like an adult. Decisions which Huck makes are rational and that is not ordinary for a fourteen-year-old kid. Huck helped a black boy to get his freedom “He’ll be ready to get down and lick his boots for shame.” He knew he was doing right thing. He cared about Jim, not about what others thinks “that people that acts as (Huck) been acting about that nigger goes to everlasting fire.” A boy who is just joking around, does not pay attention to the effect, so he can hurt somebody. That’s Huck’s case. His reaction is to apologize even when Jim is a black boy. I think Huck’s choice is not between an apology or not, not even between tell or not to tell, but it is judgment of his friendship with Jim.

Huck Finn is boy who can make fast decisions and carry their consequences. It is not difficult to decide in everyday situations, but what about moments when your decision changes your entire life? Leaving family is never easy, even if I go to a place like the United States and I will be back in a year, it is tough to say good bye. I know it because of my personal experience. Huck does not know whether he will see his friends again, he does not know whether he will ever come back. He decides to leave his home because Pap does not have any reason to punish him.

He also apologizes to a slave, he does not look at society requests but makes Jim equal to himself. For people of the 21st century this statement means to leave a comfortable position and work as a street sweeper in the poor part of the city. Mark Twain tries to show that a boy without any education knows what morally right is, so he is an example for those who are blind and can see life as it is. And that is what should be taught in high school.
