Mahatma and Indira Gandhi
INDIRA GANDHIIndira Gandhi was a child of the Indian revolution.
She met and knew most of the leaders of the struggle for independence from Britain, including Mahatma Gandhi to whom she was not related.
She was the confidante of her father Jawaharlal Nehru, who was Prime Minister from 1946 until his death in 1964 and followed in his footsteps as Prime Minister in 1966.
She was a complex, enigmatic person, who dominated Indian politics for almost two decades.
She was an important figure on the international political scene until she was assassinated by two Sikh members of her special security force in 1984.
MAHATMA GANDHI
Mohandas Karmchand Gandhi was India's great spiritual and political leader, who was known by the name the Mahatma, or Great Soul.
Gandhi's objective was 'swaraj', literally self-rule, both for individuals as well as for the nation of India, through non-violent means.
He introduced a high degree of economic self-sufficiency in all sectors from the village up.
He became one of the foremost leaders in India's struggle to become independent from Britain.
Gandhi taught that change begins within individuals.
He was so widely respected that he could exert politicial pressure by calling "fasts until death".
Gandhi brought various nationalist movements together, which eventually led to India's independence in 1947, one year before he was assassinated.
