LIPTOV REGIONThe Liptov region is one of the most beautiful and interesting regions of Slovakia. It is situated in the north of Slovakia, on the right side of river Váh and it borders on the Polish republic. It's surrounded by the mountains - Choč mountains,Veľká Fatra, Low and West Tatras. West Tatras and Low Tatras are the dominanting componens of the region. It's the cultural and tourist centre. The centre of Liptov region is Liptovský Mikuláš on the river Vah.
LIPTOVSKÝ MIKULÁŠ
HISTORY
In 7th and 8th century ( the Bronze Age) Slavonic tribes came in here. In the area of the Saint Nicolaus Church were found the foundations of a chapel and burial-ground ,built before year 1200.Alone town is first referred to in 1286.It´s first written document where the town is named after the patron of the Saint Nicolaus Church. In town output of wood, crafts and
business were dilated. In 1677 Liptovský Mikuláš became a district seat and the place where the district meetings and the court would be in session L.Mikuláš was an important town of cultural
and national life.
In 1713 Juraj Jánošík, a well-known highwayman,folk hero was in prison here in
manor - house Vranovo and he was also condemned to death and executed gibbet by arris here on the square on 17.of March 1713. It is supposed that he was condemned to death in the building of the Museum of Janko Kráľ. The Jewry presented a large of the town population in 18th century.They traded particularly in wood, leather, textiles, spirits and wine. Handicrafts and the partial trade development influenced also the construction activities. The former district House(Župný dom)today it is the seat of the district office. Contstruction of the building was started in 1713 and the present exterior features has got after the last reconstruction in 1907. In 19th century when Slovaks fought for their rights against Hungarian L.Mikuláš was centre of national life.
In 1829 the first public library was established by Gašpar Fejerpataky Belopotocký; in 1830 the first Slovak amateur theatre worked here, and in 1844 the cultural society Tatrín – (M.M.Hodža was meeting here with Ľudovít Štúr and Michal Miloslav Hurban )the forerunner of The League For the Advancement of the Slovak Nation (Matica Slovenská) - was found. In Liptovský Mikuláš the first political Programme of the Slovaks – The Petitions of the Slovak Nation – was formulated. The Programme declaring Slovaks an independent nation.
After World War II Liptovský Mikuláš started to develop and it became an administrative, economic, cultural and tourist center of the central Liptov. PRESENT
In the present time Liptovský Mikuláš is the town with 33 600 inhabitants. In the town there is leather, textile and furniture industry. And it's mainly important centre of tourism. Pešia zona was recontructed during summer holidays.In the centre of town there are lots of markets, restaurants, also typical Slovak restaurants, snack bars, pubs, disco clubs and cinema.
Námestie Osloboditeľov is the historical centre of the town. In the street of 1.máj is a national cultural monument, the buildong called Čierny orol, where the first cultural events in the town were held.Today it houses the exposision of The Liptov Museum. NATURE
In half an hour you can get from L.Mikuláš to the beautiful surrounding mountains.The most frequent route in the enviroments of Liptovský Mikuláš.
THE WEST TATRAS
They're a part of High Tatras and Tatras National park. They're mighty, wild mountains with forests, meadows and bare rocky summits. Also you can visit sheep-farms there. There is situated the highest hill of Liptov - Bystrá (2249m). The well-known valleys are Žiarska, Račkova, Jamnická and Bobrovecká. Žiarska dolina is not unknown to tourist and skiers. In the lower part of it there are a group of holiday cottages. A favourite resting place in the upper part of valley is Žiarska chata, from where you can see off for more demanding hikes.
THE LOW TATRAS
The Low Tatras is the mountains with the largest extent in Slovakia. The main ridge is 80 km long. It's created with grass area only the highest hills - Ďumbier (2043m) and Chopok (2024m) are created rocky relief. There are skiing centres with virginal romantic nature. The well-known place is
Demänovská valley. There are 31 caves, but only 2 are open for public.
The Demänovská cave of liberty
Is a jewel of Slovak caves.It has five floors and 7 km long. It is situated in the national nature reserve The cave was discovered by A. Kral with help of A. Misura and other surveyors through the dry and lowest ponor of Demanovka river in 1921. The length of operated accessible pathway is 1800 m. Elevation range between entrance and Prizemie is 66 m, between Prizemie and exit is 85 m. Pathway are 1145 m and 2150 m long.

The Demänovská ice-cave
It is also called Dragen's. It's one of the oldest caves in Europe. It has beautiful ice-decoration. The first written mention on the caves in Demanovska valley dates back to the Estergon chapter in 1299. At present, 650 m with elevation range of 48 m is open to public. THE CHOČ MOUNTAINS
They have rich and very motley vegetation. The highest hill is Choč (1611m). It has very nice view. The tourists like visiting Prosiecka and Kvačianska valleys which are one of the nicest and the most valuable in Slovakia. THE VEĽKÁ FATRA

SKIING
The most well-known, the best ski centre in Slovakia is in Demänovská valley in the Low Tatras. You can ski there from the beginning of winter until the end of April. There are good skiing tracks with ski-lifts in lovely white nature. There are tracks for beginners and for professional skiers, too. Other ski-centres in the Low Tatras are Čertovica, Závažná Poruba and L.Ján. Malino Brdo is the most well-known ski centre in the Veľká Fatra. SUMMER RECREATION
Liptovská Mara – „Liptov sea“ - dam which origined in years 1967-75 on the river Váh when it flooded 13 villages.The camp in Liptovský Trnovec is open for public. There are places for tents, beach, snack-bars, lending of boat, places for children, volleyball and minigolf. You can visit on a boat Liptov
or try water skiing, windsurfing. Fishermen will be also satisfied.
Thermal swimming - pool in the village Liptovský Ján
Bešeňová –The spa was establish on the base of hot healing springs which come from the depth of 1987 metres. There are six swimming – pool.The Spa is open all year.
FOLK CULTURE
In Liptov region you can admire the richess of folk architecture, folk costumes and crafts.
On sheep-farms and villages there are still the old traditional ways of making sheep cheese, butter and dairy products. In some villages you can also see women in typical folk costumes. You can admire folk architecture in Vlkolinec or in museum of Liptov village in Pribilina. World famous folk festival takes place every year in July in Východná. In my opinion everyone of us can find here what are looking for.
