Generals

DOUGLAS MACARTHUR
General MacArthur was a West Point man down to the bone.
He first won acclaim during World War I when he helped organize the famous Rainbow Division.
He became superintendent of West Point in 1919 and modernized the academy's standards.
In 1925 he was promoted to General and in 1930, at the age of 50, he was the youngest man ever to be appointed Chief of Staff.
In July 1941, the retired General was called back to duty to head up the U.S. Army Forces in the Far East to deter Japanese aggression.
On December 7, 1941 Japan began the Pacific war by attacking Pearl Harbor.
MacArthur's success in New Guinea was one of the first steps toward victory in region.

Following that, and MacArthur's pronouncement to Congress that "Old Soldiers never die, they just fade away," he tried, unsuccessfully, to run for President.

ADMIRAL GEORGE DEWEY
American admiral George Dewey ended Spanish power in the Philippines with his victory in the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898.
Dewey was in command of the Asiatic Squadron when Naval Secretary Theodore Roosevelt ordered him to go to Hong Kong and prepare for action in the Philippines.
Dewey's ships entered Manila Bay on May 1, 1898, where Admiral Dewey gave the now famous order to the captain of his flagship: "You may fire when you are ready, Gridley".
Dewey's rapid fire guns destroyed the Spanish fleet.

GEORGE PATTON
American general and tank commander George Patton was World War II's most colorful U.S. general and will always be remembered for making a significant contribution to Allied victory.
His showmanship and audacity and his leading genius in tank warfare resulted in bold armored advances across Germany and France in 1944 and 1945.
Though George Patton was profane, impetuous and flamboyant, his shrewd judgment made him a great combat commander.
Near the end of the war, Patton was seriously wounded in a car accident near Mannheim in Germany.
He died in a hospital in Heidelberg.
