Eastern Front, World War IDuring World War I, Russian troops at first took the offensive against German forces in 1914. Initial successes against the Germans brought Poland under Russian control, with Hungary expected to follow. Austrian reinforcements joined the Germans in 1915, and combined Austro-German forces drove the Russians out of Poland. Russian troops suffered such heavy losses along the Eastern front that they were unable to contribute significantly to the remainder of World War I.
